I was born and raised in sunny Southern California and will never tire of the West Coast, although I spent several years living in Southeast Asia, about as far from California as you can get. Wherever I am in the world, I love straying from the beaten path, experiencing local life, and discovering hidden gems - camera in hand. The beach is my happy place and when I am not there (or writing), you will usually find me baking, watching movies, and cuddling my pugs. I have traveled around the country and around the world, and it never, ever gets old. Being able to combine my passion for travel and my love of writing is nothing short of a dream.
If you have ever seen a trapeze act in person, I am going to guess that you found it as fascinating as I have. It seems like such an amazing thing to be able to soar through the air, perform cool acrobatics, and to catch and be caught by a partner. Have you ever wished you could experience these high-flying thrills for yourself? Well, I am going to let you in on something a lot of locals don’t even know about – the Santa Monica Trapeze School, where the sky’s the limit. Are you ready to fly?
Located on the historic Santa Monica Pier on the famous Pacific Coast Highway, Santa Monica Trapeze School began in 2008 as the Trapeze School New York: Los Angeles. In 2023, the owners of the institution retired and Santa Monica Trapeze School became the new entity.
The school provides a safe way for students from age 6 and up, of any fitness level or athletic background, to safely enjoy this exhilarating art form, but is more than just a platform (pardon the pun) for individuals to face their fears and go flying through the air.
The flying trapeze is an incredible tool for improving physical, mental, and emotional health through learning and practicing body awareness and conditioning, relaxation, trust, strength-building, coordination, timing, and pushing through perceived limitations of what one’s body can do.
Students are often very surprised by what they are able to do in just their very first class. And the views over the gorgeous SoCal coast aren’t bad either!
General Flying Trapeze classes range from 1.5 to 2 hours and are designed to maximize each student’s time on the trapeze. There are First Time Flyer sessions with smaller class sizes and no catching, advanced level classes, and Static Trapeze classes.
Students can also enroll in Flying Workshops which allow you to purchase monthly lessons and save on the cost.
The school offers a variety of other kinds of classes as well, including Aerial Silks and Lyra (aerial hoop), which are not only beautiful art forms but also improve coordination, body control, strength, and confidence. Lessons are tailored to the skills and interest of the student.
Love to bounce? Trampoline classes are offered to anyone, from kids to adults who want to feel like a kid again, jumping up and down, as well as those desiring to learn advanced techniques, strengthen core muscles, and build skills that can be applied to trapeze and other aerial skills.
Did you know that this school existed in Santa Monica? Would you take to the air to learn trapeze skills?
