I was born and raised in sunny Southern California and will never tire of the West Coast, although I spent several years living in Southeast Asia, about as far from California as you can get. Wherever I am in the world, I love straying from the beaten path, experiencing local life, and discovering hidden gems - camera in hand. The beach is my happy place and when I am not there (or writing), you will usually find me baking, watching movies, and cuddling my pugs. I have traveled around the country and around the world, and it never, ever gets old. Being able to combine my passion for travel and my love of writing is nothing short of a dream.
They say when something’s not broken, don’t fix it. This is not to say that innovation, development, and growth are bad things, but there is something wonderful and comforting about continuity and consistency, especially when it is something delicious! That is exactly why this classic restaurant in Southern California has become a timeless favorite.
The Apple Pan opened in 1947 and is one of the longest continuously operating restaurants in the city of Los Angeles. Its longevity is attributed to a dedication to keep things simple and to make sure whatever they do is done well.
This Los Angeles institution has changed very little since its opening which is part of what makes locals keep coming back. It is a timeless experience that lets you slow down and, for a few precious moments, forget how fast time flies and how much things have changed in the city.
The brick and varnished wood, the central open kitchen, and the 26 vinyl seats at the U-shaped counter around it take customers back to a simpler time.
The Apple Pan is known for its burgers. There are two burgers to choose from, the 1927 Steakburger and the 1947 Hickoryburger, both of which can be ordered with Tillamook Cheddar cheese and can be made as a double burger. The simple menu also offers a few sandwiches and one classic side, hot and fresh French fries.
As popular and timeless as the burgers is the fresh apple pie served with Danish vanilla ice cream. Pies are available by the slice or whole, because why would you not want to take a hand-prepared apple pie home with you?
Of course, apple is not the only pie on the menu; in fact, there are more pies on the menu than sandwiches! Other favorites are pecan and a variety of cream pies - banana, cherry, boysenberry, chocolate, and coconut - all covered with a layer of pure whipped cream.
The city of Los Angeles has grown up around this tiny diner, but it has held its own because the taste and quality of its classic burgers and pies has never changed.
It is like time stands still when you dine at The Apple Pan. Have you been here? What do you think of this classic restaurant in Southern California?
