I was born and raised in sunny Southern California and will never tire of the West Coast, although I spent several years living in Southeast Asia, about as far from California as you can get. Wherever I am in the world, I love straying from the beaten path, experiencing local life, and discovering hidden gems - camera in hand. The beach is my happy place and when I am not there (or writing), you will usually find me baking, watching movies, and cuddling my pugs. I have traveled around the country and around the world, and it never, ever gets old. Being able to combine my passion for travel and my love of writing is nothing short of a dream.
As local travel experts, we know what travelers are looking for when it comes to finding the perfect accommodations for their next trip. To compile our lists, we scour the internet to find properties with excellent ratings and reviews, desirable amenities, nearby attractions, and that something special that makes a destination worthy of traveling for.
When you really want to get away from it all – from the lights, traffic, and commotion of the city – and just unwind – the Southern California desert is a pretty great choice of destination. And I recently ran across a highly-rated rural desert rental that is not just a unique place to stay the night, but an entire experience unto itself. If you are looking for a truly one-of-a-kind, off-the-beaten-path escape, this is it. The aptly named Tile House in Twentynine Palms, CA, may also be the most quirky and fascinating spot you will ever stay in.
Not a “castle” in the way we typically think of one - with its spires and watchtowers - the Tile House is a remote and almost magical retreat that is unlike anything I have seen.
The whimsical house is as much a gallery, a museum, and a work of art as it is a place to stay. It was designed to be a place to relax, meditate, heal, and explore. The rooms are surprisingly spacious and airy, with lots of windows that overlook the desert landscape.
Located seven miles from the town of Twentynine Palms and the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park, this is a secluded home in the middle of the open desert with 360-degree wilderness views that - depending on the time of year - may include a variety of wildlife, lightning storms, meteor showers, wildflowers, and of course, stunning sunsets.
There are two comfy bedrooms with queen-sized beds and picture windows, each uniquely styled and every bit as colorful and eclectic as the rest of the house.
With dark skies, far from city lights, this is the perfect spot for stargazing. There is also a fire pit to stay nice and toasty or maybe roast some marshmallows.
Everyone who stays at this “castle” in Twentynine Palms simply raves about it. So, what do you think about this remote desert rental? Plan your own magical getaway by checking out the Tile House on Airbnb. Your desert oasis awaits! Make the most of it by taking a little time to explore the scenic Joshua Tree National Park. And if you go, please share your experience with us!
