Hiding out on a beautiful section of the Southern California coastline is a sea cave unlike any other. This cave is one of the few – if not the only – open-ceiling sea caves on the West Coast. To explore the cave, you’ll have to time your visit correctly. The cave is only accessible during low tide. It is dangerous to attempt this adventure when the tide is high – please do not do this. If the conditions are right, you’ll find yourself looking up at the sky from the floor of a spectacular sea cave! Check it out:
Sunset Cliffs Natural Park may be one of the most breathtaking destinations on the Southern California Coast. Located in San Diego, the 68-acre park extends a mile and a half along the Point Loma Peninsula's shoreline, treating visitors to views of rugged cliffs, hidden beaches, and tucked-away sea caves below.
This section of the coast contains numerous sea caves, most of which are flat-out inaccessible without a boat. However, there is one open-ceiling cave that's possible to hike into if the conditions are right.
Simply known as Sunset Cliffs Cave, you'll find it near Luscomb's Point along Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. After you've parked, you'll head down to the beach via one of the trails that departs from the cliffs. Although there are numerous trails down to the beach, we recommend the trail that's used mainly by surfers at the end of Luscomb's Point.
Once you've made the climb down to the beach - be careful during this part, the trail can get sketchy - you'll trek south until the route merges with the beach. The route is only accessible during low tide, preferably negative low tide. Do not attempt if the tide is high or if the water is too rough. Only attempt during low tide.
Look up and you'll enjoy a majestic view of the sky through the cave's open ceiling. The cave is actually quite large and you can't help but feel tiny in comparison. This is one destination that's worth the extra effort to find and explore.
The open-ceiling cave at Sunset Cliffs is a jaw-dropping destination that's truly one-of-a-kind. Make an adventure of seeking it out for yourself! And don't forget your camera.
