Throughout the years, many grisly crimes have been committed in Southern California, but none so horrendous and disturbing as the Manson Murders. During the summer of 1969 Manson and his “family” killed eight people, including five people at a home on Cielo Drive.

Cielo Drive, in the foothills above Los Angeles, is the site where one of the most infamous mass murders in U.S. history occurred.

In 1969, director Roman Polanski and his wife, actress and model Sharon Tate, were living at 10050 Cielo Drive.

On August 8th, Polanski was filming in London. Sharon, who was eight and a half months pregnant with their son, went to dinner with friends Jay Sebring, Abigail Folger and Wojciech Frykowski. The four returned to the home around 10:30 p.m.
Around midnight, Charles Manson followers Susan Atkins, Linda Kasabian, Patricia Krenwinkel and Tex Watson arrived at 10050 Cielo Drive.

Steven Parent, an 18-year-old who was visiting the property caretaker, was shot and killed when he saw the four intruders.

The intruders sliced a door screen and broke into the house.

Jay Sebring was shot and stabbed seven times. Wojciech Frykowski made it out the front door, but was shot twice and stabbed 51 times. Abigail Folger was stabbed 28 times. All three died of their wounds.
Charles Manson was convicted of the murders, along with three of four "family members."

Manson was sentenced to death, but when California abolished the death penalty in the 1970s, his sentence was reduced to life in prison. He is currently serving his sentence at Corcoran State Prison.
Susan Atkins and Patricia Krenwinkel were convicted of the murders; Linda Kasabian testified against the Manson Family in return for immunity.

After serving 40 years in prison, Susan Atkins was diagnosed with brain cancer and died while still incarcerated. Patricia Krenwinkel is serving a life sentence at the California Institute for Women in Chino, CA. Tex Watson is serving a life sentence at Mule Creek State Prison.
The home at 10050 Cielo Drive changed hands a few times. In 1994, the new owner tore down the home and built a new one in its place.

The address changed to 10060, and the new home is completely different than the home where the murders occurred.

While the home where the murders occurred is gone, Cielo Drive will always be a place with a dark, horrible history.
