Today, we thought it would be fun to spend the whole day in the picturesque town of Solvang, dubbed the Danish Capital of America. All you need is a sense of adventure and curiosity – oh, and a camera! Memories don’t capture themselves, you know! Starting your day bright and early, drive to Southern California’s Santa Ynez Valley, where Solvang lies just three hours north of Los Angeles and four-and-half hours south of San Francisco.
Consider this simple itinerary when you reach your destination.
Start your day by grabbing a meal at Cafe Dolce, located on First Street. The restaurant is known for its protein shakes, green juices, and incredible range of cafe and coffee drinks. Cafe Dolce opens daily from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm, but closes at 10:30 on Fridays and Saturdays.
Operated by the Ugly Duckling Foundation, the museum seeks to enhance the enjoyment of Denmark’s most famous citizen’s literary work. Hans Christian Andersen Museum is open daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and is located upstairs in The Book Loft Building.
A large farmhouse reminiscent of 18th century Danish architecture houses the history of Solvang. Stroll the spacious gallery for photos, artifacts, and video exhibitions celebrating the pioneer spirit and the colorful heritage of Denmark. The museum is open from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm; admission is free.
Take a break from the museum high to enjoy architecture that is almost a century years old. Bethania Lutheran Church
is still in use, but visitors are welcome inside for guided tours.
You cannot enjoy architecture in Solvang without visiting Old Mission Santa Ines. As led by Father Junipero Serra was founded in 1804 and became the nineteenth of 21 missions built across California. The mission offers stunning views of the Santa Ynez River Valley and San Rafael mountain range, outside of the incredible architecture. Self-guided tours are available every day between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm.
It is time for shopping! Stop by this antique and vintage mall and browse over 4000 square feet of space. You will find over 28 vendors offering collectibles, vintage furniture, and gorgeous antiques of various kinds. A Piece Of The Past Antiques opens seven days a week, from 10:30 am to 5:30 pm.
If there is any place in Solvang to find that special, one-of-a-kind gift, it is definitely at the Artistic Pony Studio. With over 30 local artists selling almost everything from hand-painted silk scarves to hand-turned wooden bowls, there is no way you would go home empty-handed. The Artistic Pony Studio is open every day, except Tuesdays, between 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.
Hungry again? Bit O’ Denmark, the oldest food establishment in Solvang, can help you fuel up. Located right on Aisal Road, enjoy delectable American and Danish dishes and a large smorgasbord in a wonderfully decorated restaurant.
Since there are over 120 vineyards in Solvang and more than 20 tasting rooms downtown alone, it would be almost sinful not to relax with a glass of wine. Try Casa Cassara, the family-owned vineyard that has been growing grapes since 1992. They are open daily between 12:00 am to 6:00 pm.
Before you head home, take a relaxing stroll through the flower-lined streets of California’s Little Denmark. The streets are tidy and pedestrian-friendly, offering Danish architecture, massive windmills, clock towers, and lakes. Don’t miss a show at the acclaimed PCPA Pacific Conservatory Theater outdoor theatre if you have time to spare.
