I was born and raised in sunny Southern California and will never tire of the West Coast, although I spent several years living in Southeast Asia, about as far from California as you can get. Wherever I am in the world, I love straying from the beaten path, experiencing local life, and discovering hidden gems - camera in hand. The beach is my happy place and when I am not there (or writing), you will usually find me baking, watching movies, and cuddling my pugs. I have traveled around the country and around the world, and it never, ever gets old. Being able to combine my passion for travel and my love of writing is nothing short of a dream.
I never get tired of discovering fun and unique spots and hidden gems right here in our own backyard, especially when they have stood the test of time. Take, for instance, a little place called Galco’s Soda Pop Stop in Los Angeles. This longtime neighborhood icon is unlike any soda shop you have been to, and you are going to love it.
This small family-owned business began as a neighborhood Italian grocery store known as Galco’s Old World Grocery over 100 years ago.
In 1995, the owner started to increase the soda assortment and gradually, the shop’s focus shifted almost entirely to soda pop and beers and Galco’s Soda Pop Stop was born.
The shop has drawn far-off visitors, appeared in several television shows, and been featured in a variety of magazine and newspaper publications, particularly due to its selection of over 600 classic, rare, and unique sodas. Galco’s also carries a great selection of old-fashioned candies.
Despite the change in focus, Galco’s has kept its original Italian deli open, offering -locally famous “Blockbuster” sandwiches made fresh daily. They pair perfectly with your favorite classic soda or your very own creation!
That’s right, as if the incredible variety of unusual and hard-to-find soda pop was not enough to make this a worthy stop, you can actually make and bottle your own carbonated creation at the Soda Creation Station.
With some 100 flavor syrups, there are literally millions of flavor possibilities. Customers of all ages love grabbing an empty bottle, deciding on their one-of-a-kind flavor combo, filling the bottle with soda water, and bottling their customers soda. There is even a choice of light or heavy bubbles!
Customer also come from all over to peruse the wide selection of beer from all over the world, along with hard ciders, rare and exotic wines and sakes, French Champagnes, and more.
This little family business in LA’s Highland Park neighborhood is a must-stop whether you are looking for something fun and different, need a unique gift idea, or are stocking up for an epic road trip (in which case, you should definitely check out this list of our favorite road trip snacks!)
