Southern California is filled with natural wonders and majestic scenery, and for that we’re grateful! One place that’s bound to leave you in awe is Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in Borrego Springs. The sprawling park covers desert washes, colorful badlands, rock formations, mountains, and even woodlands. However, one of the most magical features at Anza-Borrego is a narrow canyon known simply as The Slot. Walking through this natural wonder is an experience to remember, so be sure to add it to your hiking bucket list!
Located in the Colorado Desert and surrounded by mountains, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is the largest state park in California. That means there is plenty to explore at this beautiful destination, including a downright magical slot canyon.
There's a lot to talk about when it comes to Anza-Borrego, from its rich flora and fauna to its otherworldly landscape. However, we're going to focus on just one aspect of the park, a narrow canyon simply known as The Slot. Providing one of the most exciting hikes the park has to offer, it's a must for adventurers.
The Slot is tucked away in the heart of the park and takes some effort to find. Located about two miles down a dirt road, we suggest stopping by the park's visitor center for exact directions and a map before heading out. Most cars should be able to make the trek, but a good, AWD vehicle is recommended.
Once you make it to the canyon, you can set off on the trail that leads you to the canyon. Like the road to the canyon, the trail can be hard to identify. It's a narrow track that drops off the canyon rim right from the parking area. It's a bit steep, but nothing some good hiking shoes can't handle.
Following the trail, you'll be led straight to the mouth of The Slot. It's an incredible sight. Before you know it, you'll find yourself surrounded by towering siltstone walls that stretch towards the sky. The further you hike into the canyon, the narrower it gets!
Be prepared to maneuver and squeeze through tight spaces. Hiking into The Slot feels like entering another world. One of the canyon's most unique features is a natural rock bridge that connects the two canyon walls.
After about a mile, the canyon opens up to a wide dirt road. From here, you can either turn around and head back the way you came or continue down the road which loops back to the start (and adds about a mile to your trek.) This is a unique experience that's great for hikers of all ages and skill levels, so consider it for your next adventure!
