The history of Southern California’s love for the coast and surfing goes beyond the local beach scene. It is a rich and inspiring tale that has been preserved by the Surfing Heritage And Culture Center (SHACC). The museum showcases a timeline of the evolution of surfboards and the largest collection of surf archives. Let us dive deeper.
SHACC is the Y-bridge that connects California’s surfing past, present, and future. It was established in 2001 in San Clemente to preserve the culture of surfing and improve surfing knowledge.
But today, SHACC is more than an authoritative surfing museum.
The non-profit seeks to explore, enlighten, and celebrate the rich history of surfing.
As such, it houses the world’s most extensive and relevant surfing archives of surfboards, memorabilia, surfing artifacts, videography, photography, and periodical and scholarly works.
To see these incredible collections, visit SHACC on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Group visits are by appointment only. On your guided tour, you will explore different exhibits, view the SHACC Photo Prints showcase, and learn about legendary surfers.
The exhibits at SHACC are ever-changing and available for a limited period. Currently, the "Celluloid History of Surfing" showcase is on display. It highlights and analyzes the filmmaking industry's impact on the culture, sport, and lifestyle of surfing in the U.S.
If you are curious about the types of exhibits SHACC hosts, go ahead and view some of the past exhibits. Keeping true to its mission of education, SHACC offers educational resources and about 12 courses with complete lesson plans at no charge.
SHACC is no stranger to hosting events. Check out the events calendar to see what's in store. Before you wrap up your tour, stop by the SHACC Store and consider purchasing an item or three. The proceeds help to keep the organization running.
While you plan your visit to SHACC, take this virtual tour of the facility. But remember, it is not as wonderful as the real thing!
