I was born and raised in sunny Southern California and will never tire of the West Coast, although I spent several years living in Southeast Asia, about as far from California as you can get. Wherever I am in the world, I love straying from the beaten path, experiencing local life, and discovering hidden gems - camera in hand. The beach is my happy place and when I am not there (or writing), you will usually find me baking, watching movies, and cuddling my pugs. I have traveled around the country and around the world, and it never, ever gets old. Being able to combine my passion for travel and my love of writing is nothing short of a dream.
For most restaurants in Southern California – whether you find them here on our site or elsewhere – you can simply open your map app for directions and head out. However, the wonderful restaurant I am about to personally recommend is going to require a little different planning. Located 26 miles off the shore on Catalina Island, this waterfront restaurant in Avalon, California, can only be reached by boat.
Technically, you can also get to the island by helicopter or on an exciting jet ski adventure, but most people take the Catalina Express ferry from Long Beach, San Pedro, or Dana Point, CA.
Catalina Island’s Avalon Grille offers an upscale dining experience with impeccable service and a seasonal menu centered on American regional cuisine.
This restaurant sits in a prime location in the heart of the waterfront town of Avalon and faces the beach with beautiful day and night views of the entire bay.
The ambiance is all at once beachy and laid-back, elegant and romantic, and family-friendly. The bar is large but has a warm, cozy vibe. The outdoor patio is bright and casual, and the high-top tables along the front windows enjoy gorgeous sunset views with as the restaurant lights dim.
I can personally recommend the AG Wagyu Burger (cooked medium) with an order of the Crispy Burssels Sprouts - chef’s kiss! The Fig & Burrata Salad is also wonderful.
Whether you stop in for a couple of drinks at the bar or order a little something to accompany your meal, you will find a signature menu of handcrafted cocktails, as well as a selection of world-class wines and micro-brew beers. I personally recommend the French 75, a refreshing cocktail made with champagne, lemon, gin, and sugar.
Don’t forget dessert - from decadent options like Chocolate Mousse and Toffee Creme Brûlée to fresh flavors in the form of sorbets and gelatos - they taste as good as they look!
Have you had the pleasure of eating at Avalon Grille? Would you be willing to take a boat ride to try it? Find more information, including the current seasonal menu on the Visit Catalina Island website. You can also stay updated on menus and specials by following Avalon Grille on Facebook. With ferry trips scheduled throughout the day and evening, you can head to Catalina for a few hours or the day. Or, if you want my advice, book a room at the gorgeous tropical-themed Pavilion Hotel. Among the many amenities, your stay will include a food and beverage credit that can be used at Avalon Grille! It’s a win-win getaway package. You’re welcome.
