There’s no denying that Southern Californians are unique! From what we eat to how we drive and even the phrases we use, we have our own special way of doing things. We are definitely guilty of number 2 and number 8. Which ones can you relate to?
1. Estimating distance in minutes instead of miles.
Although the pandemic significantly cut down on traffic, anyone from SoCal is always anticipating a traffic jam. This means planning an ETA based on the miles to our destination is nearly impossible. Instead, we always calculate by minutes.
2. Putting fresh avocado on EVERYTHING.
Whether it's avocado toast or avocado in our scrambled eggs, if you live in SoCal you most likely put avocado on everything.
3. In Southern California, we live in flip flops.
Southern Californians sure know how to take casual to new heights. And when it comes to our shoe-wear, flip flops have become part of the daily dress code.
4. Southern Californians drive everywhere.
Yes, the stay-at-home order has changed a lot of things in our daily life. But when things get back to normal, you can count on people in SoCal driving everywhere instead of walking, biking, or using another form of transport. We seem to have a love-hate relationship with our cars.
5. Slathering on sunscreen.
Anyone who lives in SoCal can tell you that sunscreen isn't just for sunny days at the beach. We also slather it on for quick trips outside even when it's overcast just to be on the safe side.
6. "Bring a jacket."
Living in SoCal means being accustomed to cool nights. This might explain why the phrase "bring a jacket" is part of our vocabulary after the sun goes down.
7. Phrases like "May Gray" and "June Gloom" roll off our tongue with ease.
We're pretty accustomed to mild weather here in SoCal. But as soon as the overcast season shows up, you'll often hear these phrases in every conversation to describe the weather.
8. The 10. The 8. The 405.
If you've ever listened to a Southern Californian talk about freeways, you'll notice the word "the" is added before each freeway number. This is definitely unique to us. Take "the" 10. Take "the" 8. And then take "the" 405. How many times have you said that?
9. We live in our sunglasses...even when it's not sunny outside.
Whether it's the middle of the summer or an overcast May Gray or June Gloom, for some reason you can always spot a Southern Californian wearing sunglasses.
