Gazing upon the Painted Cave, it is clear that Southern California’s beauty is majestic. This natural cavern, located off the coast of Santa Barbara is the longest in North America, coming in at 1227 feet, the size of four football fields. It plunges 400 meters into the side of Santa Cruz Island, within Channel Islands National Park. Fortunately for us, it is open for public exploration, so why not make a trip out of it?
The Painted Cave is beautiful, fascinating, and frightening in every way. It sits in the water, only accessible via watercraft. Its name is courtesy of the natural colors that paint the inner walls of the cavern—created by lichens, algae, and various rock types.
The entrance of the Painted Cave sits in 30 feet of water and reaches 160 feet above the water level, stretching almost 100 feet wide. The tunnel is large enough to swallow a large boat almost halfway; kayaks and smaller watercraft can slip even deeper.
While you cannot explore the cave on foot, you can join one of the many boat trips from Island Packers that visit the cave daily. You can also join a guided kayak tour for a breathtaking and serene time. Swimming and kayaking experience are required.
A large boat would have to retreat after 75 feet or so. But if you are paddling a canoe or kayak, you can sail even further. If you become overwhelmed sailing deeper, focus on the different shades of colors on the cave walls. It is a comforting sight.
Another surreal experience occurs two-thirds into your journey when the cave narrows. You will paddle into a huge pitch-black chamber where there is nothing but the sounds of rushing water, bawling seal lions and harbor seals, and several species of birds.
During the rainy season, a breathtaking waterfall forms at the mouth of the cave. If you choose a guided kayak tour, you will enjoy a boat ride back to the shore.
Extend your time in the water by exploring smaller caves outside the Painted Cave or snorkeling in the surrounding Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary! You can read more about the remarkable Painted Cave right here. Learn more about Island Packers and the company’s kayak trips here.
