I was born and raised in sunny Southern California and will never tire of the West Coast, although I spent several years living in Southeast Asia, about as far from California as you can get. Wherever I am in the world, I love straying from the beaten path, experiencing local life, and discovering hidden gems - camera in hand. The beach is my happy place and when I am not there (or writing), you will usually find me baking, watching movies, and cuddling my pugs. I have traveled around the country and around the world, and it never, ever gets old. Being able to combine my passion for travel and my love of writing is nothing short of a dream.
It is no secret that this state, and greater Los Angeles in particular, is made up of cultures from all over the world. From food to architecture, diverse influences can be seen all around us. But few know about some of the most incredible sites that exist here. Experience Old World sights, cultures, and traditions on this international road trip in Southern California.
This road trip covers 122 miles and we recommend a weekend or overnight trip because every stop on this trip begs to be explored, so give yourself time to really experience your favorite spots. You can click on the interactive map to customize your trip - adjust the route, add or remove stops, etc. Have an amazing trip!
We start this epic tour of the Old World in Ancient Egypt. Well, actually, Chino Hills, but you would hardly know it when you come upon what looks like an ancient Egyptian palace. This strikingly detailed structure was built in 2020 and was purposed to be an Egyptian restaurant under the name “Farou Food,” however the interior was never completed and it remains vacant, with an unknown future. It has become known simply as “The Egyptian Building.”

2. BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Chino Hills
15100 Fairfield Ranch Rd, Chino Hills, CA 91709, USA
After leaving Egypt, we find ourselves (surprisingly nearby) in the heart of India at the Shri Swaminarayan Mandir. This massive Hindu temple complex is the fifth traditional Mandir on the continent. It was inspired by His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj, who visited the site in 2000 and stirred up a group of his devotees to build the temple. Check out the Visitors Center where you can learn all about this place.
No one will blame you if, as you approach the Hsi Lai Temple, you forget that you are in the United States and think that you have been whisked away to the Forbidden City during the Chinese Ming and Ching Dynasties. Believe it or not, the “Bodhisattva Hall” that you see first is not the main shrine, which is actually only seen by going past this first building to the courtyard behind.
Off to Naples! This of course, is Naples in Long Beach, CA,, not Europe, but you will definitely experience the charm of the famous Italian canals. Stroll along the serene waterfront walkways, rent a hydro-bike or pedal boat to explore the water, or cruise the canals in true Italian style on a Venetian gondola.
The Citadel Outlets in Commerce, CA, are a modern open outlet mall that looks like an ancient fortified city. The structure features what is called Exotic Revival architecture and was built in the style of an ancient Assyrian palace of King Sargon II.
The fairytale Spadena House is straight out of a storybook (remember Hansel and Gretel?), or perhaps a tiny town on a wooded German hillside. This whimsical, intentionally dilapidated house - also known as The Witch’s House - was designed by Hollywood art director Harry Oliver in the early 1920s. It is a historical landmark in Beverly Hills and included on several LA Tours.
On the grounds of a large community park in Glendale, you will find the tranquil Japanese Friendship Garden and Shoseian Tea House. Enjoy the Zen-like serenity of the topiary-like trees, koi pond, and rock stream. In the center of it all is the traditional tea house, which can be toured with prior reservations.
And there you have it. A trip through the Old World that you can only get in SoCal, and you don’t even have to leave the greater Los Angeles area. Have you seen all of these fascinating buildings? Do you know of others that could be added to this itinerary? Share your thoughts with us in the comments!
