The Mount Baldy loop features an 11-mile round trip view of the area at 3,990 feet, not for the faint-hearted. It’s so high up that many people use the ski lift to get to the top of the trail faster. It can reduce the total elevation you experience by 1,500 feet. For non-experienced hikers, it can be worth the effort to cut the hike in half by using the lift.
Considered a very difficult trail to traverse, the Devil's Backbone offers incredible views of the area. Skilled hikers know better than to set foot on the trail in the late afternoon. Mornings tend to be cooler and full of shade, making it a much more pleasant experience for all.
Dogs are welcome on the trail, but you should keep them on a leash. Make sure to bring plenty of water for them as well when you decide to hike the Loop. You'll want to make sure that they have protection from the sun, too, so it's best to take them with you during the earliest hours of the day.
A sign warns you that "You are on Your Own." It's important to pay close attention to its warning. There is a rescue fee involved if you can't get back down the trail on your own. It may be the thing that discourages novice hikers from trying to complete a more difficult hike than they're prepared to do physically.
Taking the ski lift to the top of the trail helps you "Adjust Your Altitude." It can be a welcome sight if you're struggling to catch your breath. You'll notice a distinct difference in how much altitude you experience by taking it instead of hiking the rest of the way on your own.
A permanent in-ground plaque announces the elevation at San Antonio. It's a whopping 10,064 feet! Imagine your excitement when you reach that part of Mount Baldy. It's an incredible feeling knowing that you've hiked that far up the trail.
The scenery is heavily tree-lined and beautiful. It's a lot to take in but well worth the experience. Even if you don't make it to the top, there is plenty to look at and admire while hiking the Loop.
