There's No House In The World Like This One In Southern California

Have you heard about the exotic Bell Pavilion Guest House (aka Mushroom House) located in San Diego? You can find this space-age looking abode hiding in La Jolla, in a secluded area of Black’s Beach tucked up against the rugged rocks high above the surf on a 10-foot cement pedestal.

Sam Bell, of Bell's Potato Chips, was looking for a summer home with a stunning view of the ocean. When he found the perfect place in La Jolla, he decided he wanted to add a guest house. His new home included the surrounding property of a 300-foot cliff that led to a remote area of Black's Beach. The location was an ideal spot for a private and unique guest pad. Ya know, your average summer home.

Bell's vision was brought to life by Dale Naegle in 1968, who designed and built this distinctive mushroom-like structure directly on Black's Beach.

The Mushroom House is connected to the main house via a 300-foot tramway for easy access between both homes. I imagine that makes for an interesting commute each morning.

Here's a shot of the main house from the street above. You'd never guess from looking at this unassuming home that a hidden gem was hiding on the other side of the cliff. You sure don't have to worry about intruders in a guest house like this as no one even knows it's there!

This may be La Jolla's best-kept secret, so check it for yourself. Although this guest house is located on private property, the perimeter of the beachside home is open to the public and can be viewed by hiking the nearby canyon trail.
