Southern California’s vast and varied landscapes are full of surprises. Hiding out near the hills overlooking Santa Barbara is a unique geological feature that makes for a fun and short adventure! Hikers can take on a short trail and scramble to a place aptly known as Lizard’s Mouth Rock. From the rock, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding scenery – plus a fun photo-op. Here’s what you need to know about this gem of a hike near Santa Barbara:
Located in Los Padres National Forest, Lizard's Mouth Rock is a unique rock formation that overlooks Santa Barbara and the coast. The hike to the rock is quick but leaves a big impression with jaw-dropping views and scenery.
To find the trailhead, take Highway 154 West from Santa Barbara into the mountains. Turn left onto W Camino Cielo Road and follow it for just over three miles until you reach the trailhead which is marked by a small wooden sign.
The lower trail departs from the parking area and is a quick, 500-yard hike. This is the most popular route to Lizard's Mouth Rock since the rocky terrain is well-suited for some easy and fun scrambling.
The upper trail is even shorter than the lower trail and is a mostly dirt trail. This trail is more suited for those who just want to catch the sunrise/sunset and are not necessarily interested in hopping rocks or getting a workout.
Regardless of the path you choose, you'll be treated to classically gorgeous SoCal views, including the Pacific Ocean in the distance. The trail meanders through boulders and brush, giving you plenty to see and explore.
Vaguely shaped like an amphibious head, Lizard's Mouth definitely sticks out among the scenery. Many hikers opt to climb up onto the "lizard's" back for the best vantage point.
Lizard's Mouth is just tucked away enough to feel like a backcountry adventure but easy enough to find when you feel like a short hike. It's also just a fun view! See the trail map here.
What do you think? Will you be adding this unique little hike to your to-do list? The views are certainly worth a short scramble up the rocks! Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.
