The Lake Calavera Loop Trail is ranked as moderate, so it's ideal for those who have some experience hiking. There is an incline on the trail, so come prepared with sturdy shoes and plenty of water as you'll need both on this hike.
Just shy of 5 miles (4.8, to be exact), this trail will give you a nice workout in the great outdoors. It is a loop trail, so you can make this hike as long or as short as you'd like.
There are so many things to love about this trail. The charming boardwalk that winds through a canopy of trees is one of our favorite reasons to hike this beauty.
During your hike, make sure to stop near the lake to watch for wildlife. You'll see plenty of birds enjoying the water in the afternoon sun.
Perhaps one of the most fascinating things about this trail is that it's at the site of a former volcano. It's now dormant, but you can still see evidence of its volcanic past.
You can even walk along the top of the former lava columns for an added adventure. It also makes for a great photo opportunity, but be careful as there is quite a steep drop from the edge.
