I was born and raised in sunny Southern California and will never tire of the West Coast, although I spent several years living in Southeast Asia, about as far from California as you can get. Wherever I am in the world, I love straying from the beaten path, experiencing local life, and discovering hidden gems - camera in hand. The beach is my happy place and when I am not there (or writing), you will usually find me baking, watching movies, and cuddling my pugs. I have traveled around the country and around the world, and it never, ever gets old. Being able to combine my passion for travel and my love of writing is nothing short of a dream.
What is it about immersing ourselves in nature that has such a powerful grounding and balancing effect? For me, it’s the sound of ocean waves or staring up into the tops of majestic California Redwoods. For others, it may be pine forests and mountain lakes. Here in Southern California, we also have a number of gorgeously manicured botanic gardens that feel like havens of tranquility, one of which features something extra special each summer. You are in for a real treat when you visit this butterfly garden in Palos Verdes, CA.
South Coast Botanic Garden is a true oasis in the city, a beautiful space full of color and life that was developed over a sanitary landfill - one of the first in the world - which already sets it apart as unique. It symbolizes a practical way to deal with waste disposal issues while beautifying and improving the value of the land.
SOAR - Tropical Butterflies is an annual feature at South Coast Botanic Garden that runs from May through August 31 and is an experience you don’t want to miss.
Tickets for SOAR are $23 for adults, $13 for children ages 5 to 12, $8 for ages 2 to 4, and $19 for students and seniors. Infants under 2 years of age are free.

This immersive program gives visitors the opportunity to find themselves surrounded by hundreds of colorful, tropical butterflies.
When you enter the garden, you will observe many of the beautiful plants that naturally exist as part of the butterflies’ habitat, then take a peek in the “Emergence Chamber” where, if your timing is right, you may just see a butterfly coming out of its cocoon!
In the Butterfly Pavilion, you will be able to enjoy the tranquility of being immersed among fluttering butterflies that fly freely in the exhibit. Take advantage of the moments when they land on a plant or flower to snap some photo memories.
Ready to take your butterfly experience to the ultimate level? For the first time, this year SOAR features an optional Butterfly Feeding Experience! For an additional $6, you can choose either a flower vial or ring filled with nectar to entice the butterflies to come and take a drink.
What could make you feel more connected to nature than feeding delicate butterflies? Have you been to this botanic garden in Palos Verdes to see these fluttering beauties?
