I was born and raised in sunny Southern California and will never tire of the West Coast, although I spent several years living in Southeast Asia, about as far from California as you can get. Wherever I am in the world, I love straying from the beaten path, experiencing local life, and discovering hidden gems - camera in hand. The beach is my happy place and when I am not there (or writing), you will usually find me baking, watching movies, and cuddling my pugs. I have traveled around the country and around the world, and it never, ever gets old. Being able to combine my passion for travel and my love of writing is nothing short of a dream.
It is no secret that there are endless options when it comes to awesome places to eat and drink in Southern California. That does not, however, mean that there are no secrets up this state’s figurative sleeve – and I just love finding them. The very definition of a hidden gem, this wine bar in Pasadena, CA, combines the secrecy of a speakeasy, the coziness of a library, and the elegance of a wine bar. Want to take a peek?
Finding the secret entrance to The Cellar in Pasadena is an adventure in itself. Enter a storefront that houses a little business plaza and follow the hallway to an elevator in the back.
Below the busy streets and sidewalks of the city, this secret speakeasy welcomes guests into its cozy, intimate, and sophisticated - but never stuffy - atmosphere.
As cool as the bar itself is, hiding its entrance is just one way that it takes the attention off of itself. Perhaps the most unique feature is the one that is not present - there is no actual bar!
Wooden walls and ceilings, tables lit by small library lamps, historic faces on the walls, and subtle touches of greenery give the space the classic warmth and romance of an old library, encouraging guests to settle in for a while.
In addition to little nooks and cozy tables, there are several sets of leather sofas that face each other with coffee tables in between. The speakeasy is purposely designed to put the attention on the person or people you are with.
The bar menu features shareable options in the form of appetizers, gorgeous charcuterie boards, and desserts.
The shelves that line the walls are filled with books and wine. It is truly one of the most unique wine bars in Southern California. The corner piano calmly plays itself instead of having a performer vying for your attention.
The minimal website of The Cellar preserves the wine bar’s air of mystery, but you can find hours and private group information. No reservations are taken so guests feel free to stay and enjoy their time here as long as they wish. Have you been to this hidden speakeasy in Pasadena? We would love to hear your thoughts. Pasadena is full of hidden gems, cool history, and great restaurants. If you need an idea for a little romantic getaway, check out this charming bed and breakfast.
