When we consider the notable features of Griffith Park, we can say that the 4,210-acre property in LA has earned every one of the 10 million visitors it sees each year. One of such wonderful spots is what remains of the Old LA Zoo, which stands just a few miles south of where the current zoo stands.
This less-than-four-mile hike on the Griffith Park Old Zoo Loop will take you up the ness of Bee Rock for stunning views of Glendale and the San Gabriels, and back down through the ruins of the original LA Zoo.
Our trailhead lies at the historic carousel lot. Once you arrive, hike southwest and out past the gate. There are about four unmarked trailheads in this area; you will want to follow the broad, short fire road, marked by a small trail ascending off the main path.
The trail continues on a dirt road bordered by shady trees and past blank signposts and a restored amphitheater. Walk through the amphitheater, climb up the steps, and make a sharp right onto the fire road, where the trail diverges into two.
The higher trail leads to Bee Rock, and the lower trail runs right through the Old LA Zoo. Stick to the former; it has an ascent of about 120 feet and a steady, gradual descent. If you look down, you may spot some of the old zoo structures.
Continue following the path to where the trail opens up a bit, where Bee Rock comes into view. You will work your way up to some tight switchbacks but the stunning views as you approach Bee Rock are worth it. The entire area is blocked by a chain-link fence for protection, but the views are incredible nonetheless.
You can reward yourself with a ride on the carousel near the parking lot or a quick rest on any picnic tables littered throughout the defunct zoo.
