Each year visitors flock to The Flower Fields in Carlsbad, CA to see the famous blossoms before they’re gone. The flowers are in bloom for only a six-week window from March through early May each spring.
Giant Tecolote Ranunculus flowers cover almost fifty acres on the ranch. These multi-colored flowers are part of the tulip family and they originate from Asia Minor.
Luther Gage, an early Californian settler, began cultivating these flowers over 85 years ago. He first started growing the Ranunculus seeds in his fields near a small vegetable farm in South Oceanside.
The owner of the vegetable farm, Frank Frazee, started growing his own ranunculus in 1933 and passed the craft down to his son. After generations of cultivation from different growers, the current flower fields we know today were established in Carlsbad, CA.
In the springtime, the ranch transforms into a tourist attraction for visitors from all over the region. It’s also a popular location for special events, weddings, and galas that can hold up to 200 people.
During wildflower season, fresh cut ranunculus flowers and bulbs are for sale at the farm. So, you can take your own flowers home to display or plant bulbs in your garden to create your own touch of spring.
