I was born and raised in sunny Southern California and will never tire of the West Coast, although I spent several years living in Southeast Asia, about as far from California as you can get. Wherever I am in the world, I love straying from the beaten path, experiencing local life, and discovering hidden gems - camera in hand. The beach is my happy place and when I am not there (or writing), you will usually find me baking, watching movies, and cuddling my pugs. I have traveled around the country and around the world, and it never, ever gets old. Being able to combine my passion for travel and my love of writing is nothing short of a dream.
Historically, Southern California has always been known for ranches, farms, orchards, and groves. While cities have taken over much of the land, fresh produce is still plentiful and the farmers markets held in towns and cities across the state bring the farm to shoppers every week. Fresh fruits and vegetables are no longer the only reason to stroll through these open-air markets. From seasonal favorites to baked goods and handicrafts, some incredible farmers markets in Southern California have really made a name for themselves, and for good reason.
1. Beverly Hills Farmers Market
9300 Civic Center Dr, Beverly Hills, CA 90210, USA
This certified farmers’ market not only boasts some of California’s finest produce, but shoppers will find fresh baked goods, quality teas and herbs, and specialty products, as well as live music and a petting zoo. The Beverly Hills Farmers Market is also home to lively events throughout the year, including an annual Pie Bake, Picklefest, and Cookin' Kids workshops. Visit the market on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine.
Less than a 5-minute walk from the iconic Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Hollywood Farmers Market is a Southern California gathering place. Local families and restaurants frequent the market for the best seasonal produce, artisan foods, music, handicrafts, and even book signings by well-known authors. Come shop 160 vendors on Sundays from 8 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
One of the first 20 farmers markets in California, the Santa Barbara Farmers Market began with a handful of umbrella-covered tables and a few vendors. Now, this certified farmers market has become a community institution and brings together local producers as well as some who provide goods not available in the area. The Santa Barbara Certified Farmers Market Association has six locations in the county, each open on a different day of the week. Learn more and find all locations on the Association website.
The Farmers Market in Downtown Santa Monica operates as two markets. The Wednesday market, which began in 1981, is considered one of the most diverse certified farmers markets in the United States. Over 60 farms sell to locals, tourists, celebrities, and renowned Los Angeles chefs. The Saturday market features 40 farm stands and has many certified organic growers. Both markets are open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
This certified Sunday afternoon market has been voted one of San Diego’s best farmers markets. At the Solana Beach Farmers Market, shoppers can browse a great selection of organic and locally-grown fruits and veggies, fresh breads and pastries, handmade soaps and chocolate, jewelry, hand-crafted knives, and more. An open-air food court with plenty of tables provides a perfect space to enjoy lunch at the market.
This award-winning farmers market was established in 1999 and is open starting at 4 p.m. every Thursday of the year, with the exception of Thanksgiving Day. Shoppers browse a beautiful tree-lined market to find fresh California-grown produce and delicious prepared foods while enjoying live music. Boutique shops and restaurants around the South Pasadena Farmers Market often stay open late enough for shoppers to explore afterward.
Finally, we have The Original Farmers Market, a historic market that has become a Los Angeles institution. With a history reaching back to a partnership and two dairy farms in 1880, it has grown into far more than a typical farmers market; this could now well be the city’s top destination for food and beverage.
The Original Farmers Market is open 7 days a week and has attracted scores of permanent stall residents, from the freshest produce and juice to gourmet bakeries, ice cream, restaurants, and wine shops. If you find yourself in the L.A. area, this is one farmers market you do not want to pass up.
