I was born and raised in sunny Southern California and will never tire of the West Coast, although I spent several years living in Southeast Asia, about as far from California as you can get. Wherever I am in the world, I love straying from the beaten path, experiencing local life, and discovering hidden gems - camera in hand. The beach is my happy place and when I am not there (or writing), you will usually find me baking, watching movies, and cuddling my pugs. I have traveled around the country and around the world, and it never, ever gets old. Being able to combine my passion for travel and my love of writing is nothing short of a dream.
Throughout Southern California, and the world for that matter, there are charming cities and quaint little towns, each offering something unique in the way of food, nature, activities, or history. However, there are very few that offer all of those and more in one place. La Jolla, in San Diego County, is just such an enchanting town in Southern California – one where you can enjoy wilderness trails, upscale shopping and dining, pristine beaches, cave exploration, and even bioluminescent waves.
Surrounded on three sides by striking beaches and bluffs, the waterfront community of La Jolla has been dubbed “The Jewel” of San Diego County, with a charming, upscale vibe and epic views of one of the prettiest stretches of coastline in the area.
La Jolla Shores is a mile-long beach surrounded by scenic cliffs and graceful palm trees. The pristine shore boasts gorgeous waves, stunning blue water, fascinating tide pools, and a host of activities, including swimming, kayaking, snorkeling, surfing, and scuba lessons.
La Jolla Cove, another secluded beach south of La Jolla Shores, is an ideal spot to catch California Sea Lions basking in the sun on the sand and rocks.
At the northern edge of La Jolla you will find Torrey Pines State Reserve, a stretch of preserved wilderness right on the coast. There are eight miles of trails of varying lengths and intensities, each providing a completely different experience.

Trails offer views of the rarest pine tree in the country, salt marshes, wildflowers, badlands, and of course, the beautiful and rugged coastline. Depending on the season, you may be able to see migrating whales and dolphins. Did we mention there is also a golf course at Torrey Pines, too?
A series of seven intriguing sea caves open along the La Jolla cliffs. Each tall, narrow cave mouth opens to a unique and interesting cavern. Six of the caves can only be accessed by water and a kayak tour gives you the best experience.
One more thing you can only experience here in La Jolla is a visit to Sunny Jim’s Sea Cave, the only cave in La Jolla that you can access from land. Like a secret world, you access the cave by entering a small wood-shingled house-turned-boutique, The Cave Store. At the back of the shop is a long dark tunnel with stairs that lead to the sea cave.
The tunnel was originally dug to allow tourists to reach the cave by land, but it is said that bootleggers used the tunnel during Prohibition to smuggle goods via the sea cave. You won’t find that piece of history anywhere else.
In addition to its fabulous ocean views, La Jolla is also a shopping haven with a little something for every kind of shopper. Whether you are looking for luxury brands, one-of-a-kind designers, quaint boutiques, or stunning shopping centers with a little bit of everything, La Jolla’s Shopping Village has it all.

Almost every year, toward the end of summer, the waves at La Jolla beach put on a special show each evening - glowing, sparkly blue waves, caused by a bloom of a specific species of algae. The phenomenon is called bioluminescence and is a wondrous thing to see.
