Located in Downey, the Columbia Memorial Space Center is a fun and affordable hands-on destination where kids and adults alike can learn about the wonders of space. If you have yet to visit it, consider it time to plan a field trip!
The Space Center is the National Memorial to the space shuttle Columbia and its crew. The museum is actually on the site of the former Boeing/Rockwell/North American plan where all of the Apollo Command/Service Modules were built and the space shuttle was conceived. Put simply, there's no better place to let your curiosity run wild.
The museum brings the wonder and excitement of innovative science to the public through a hands-on learning center, world-class programs, and a variety of engaging exhibits. If you didn't already have an interest in outer space, you sure will after your visit.
Consisting of 20,000 square feet, the Space Center is loaded with fascinating exhibits. Among them include a robotics lab, HD computer lab, and a variety of exhibits dedicated to showing what it's like to live and work on the International Space Station.
Additionally, the Space Center hosts all types of temporary exhibits, including the newest exhibit that is dedicated to the 40th Anniversary of the Space Shuttle Columbia and its 27 space missions. The exhibit includes artifacts from the Space Center's archive, donated items from former employees, and much more.
The museum also hosts a variety of camps, workshops, and other monthly events. Designed to encourage interest in STEM for kids, you'll find that there's almost always something to do at the Space Center! And if you can't make the drive out to Downey, you can even enjoy the Space Center through its virtual exhibits and programs .
