Every year, approximately 300,000 people flock to this aquarium for exhibits and programs that showcase the rich, diverse marine life of Southern California. Located in Los Angeles, Cabrillo Marine Aquarium offers thorough documentation of SoCal’s local sea life through aquaria, interpretive displays, and museum collections. Here is what you can expect during your admission-free visit to Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in SoCal:
There are three primary exhibits at Cabrillo Marine Aquarium: Susanne Lawrenz-Miller Exhibit Hall, Exploration Center, and Aquatic Nursery.
Head to Susanne Lawrenz-Miller Exhibit Hall for ecological awareness, marine biology education, and informative exhibits. The three major environments showcased at this exhibit hall are Sand and Mud, Rocky Shores, and Open Ocean Ecosystems.
These exhibits are further divided into smaller showcases such as the kelp forest, which is the richest habitat along the Californian shores. Inhabitants of this ecosystem include the giant kelp, bat star, bocaccio, California scorpionfish, and masking crab.
There is also the Rocky Shores exhibit. When visiting, use the touch tank to interact with marine life such as the sea star or a prickly urchin. The touch tank expert will teach you the names and special traits of the marine life, as well as answer any questions you may have.
Moving on from Susanne Lawrenz-Miller Exhibit Hall, you should explore the Aquatic Nursery. It is a working lab that grants visitors access to active scientific research into over 40 marine species. The lab also focuses on four major aquaculture themes, including Aquaculture for Species Survival and Research for Teaching, Sharing, and Science.
The Exploration Center impresses with the "Crawl In Aquarium" display. This exhibit involves you crawling into a large aquarium without getting wet, and being surrounded by ocean life like octopuses, stingrays, flatfish, and more!
