Griffith Park is one of the largest city parks in the entire United States. This Los Angeles park boasts more than 4,210 acres with some of the most incredible attractions. However, what many people don’t know is that years ago, the old LA Zoo was built in this park in Southern California, only to be abandoned and left to decay.

Located in the Griffith Park Canyon area, the Griffith Park Zoo in southern California was once a bustling and exciting place to be. This zoo first opened in 1912 with only a handful of animals calling it home.

Exhibits and enclosures were constructed and within a few years, there were dozens of animals. In fact, by the 1950s, this zoo had more than 1,000 animals.

The old LA zoo certainly had a few issues during its time in operation, including poorly built enclosures and sewage problems. Plus, with its large number of animals, more space was needed.

In the late 1950s, a bond was passed to fund a new zoo. This meant the Griffith Park Zoo in southern California was going to close its gates. It officially closed in 1966.

You will find the trailhead to this loop trail at the historic carousel lot. As you tackle this hike and make your way to the abandoned zoo, you will pass a restored amphitheater, climb multiple steps, and enjoy views of Bee Rock.
It really is quite fascinating to look around and get a glimpse of a time years ago.

After you have explored the old Los Angeles Zoo at Griffith Park, head two miles north of the abandoned site to the current Los Angeles Zoo for a day of excitement, fun, and adventure. It is one of the best day trips in southern California for the entire family.

Today, the LA Zoo is home to more than 2,200 animals. Throughout the zoo, approximately 270 different species are represented, including 58 endangered species. And, if you wish, you can always visit the zoo’s botanical gardens as well, where you will find more than 7,000 individual plants and 800 plant species.
