I was born and raised in sunny Southern California and will never tire of the West Coast, although I spent several years living in Southeast Asia, about as far from California as you can get. Wherever I am in the world, I love straying from the beaten path, experiencing local life, and discovering hidden gems - camera in hand. The beach is my happy place and when I am not there (or writing), you will usually find me baking, watching movies, and cuddling my pugs. I have traveled around the country and around the world, and it never, ever gets old. Being able to combine my passion for travel and my love of writing is nothing short of a dream.
To me, comfort food and Southern food are pretty much synonymous, and I just love biscuits and gravy – when they are done right. The fact is that you can find them in a myriad of places, but not all biscuits (or gravy, for that matter) are created equal. Of course, “best” is subjective, but we all know that one of the best ways to find a great place to eat is to ask a local. And if you ask locals about great biscuits and gravy in SoCal, you just might find yourself at 24th Street Cafe in Bakersfield, CA… and you’d better come hungry!
An old-fashioned diner with a loyal following, 24th Street Cafe in Bakersfield was opened in 1987 by a third-generation diner and truck-stop owner. The building has a long history in the community as a local watering hole as it was previously Cy’s Coffee Shop which opened in 1950.
Several servers and cooks have worked at the cafe for years, even decades, contributing to the consistency, longevity, and classic ambiance that customers love.
Just look at these mouthwatering Southern-style buttermilk biscuits - you can practically smell them and feel that dense yet fluffy texture! They are baked fresh and served with rich country gravy for the perfect combination.
Biscuits and gravy are offered as a main entree and also as a side with nearly every breakfast on the menu (and a popular choice!) including Chicken Fried Steak, Steak and Eggs, Trout and Eggs, a long list of delicious omelets, and more.
The biscuits and gravy are just part of what keeps people coming back and a line out the door. Another extremely popular item on the menu is the cinnamon-pecan-butter-topped Pumpkin Pancakes. Daily specials also include fruit-topped pancakes, waffles, and crepes, and for those with an especially strong sweet tooth, a massive gooey cinnamon roll.
The cafe is decorated with vintage items and in true classic diner tradition, customers can enjoy their meal at the counter. Many regulars love this option where they can chat with fellow diners, watch the bustling kitchen activity, and enjoy an extra bit of attention from servers.
Breakfast is served all day, but the diner also serves a great selection of burgers, piled-high hot and cold deli sandwiches, salads, and a fan-favorite - Texas Chili.
24th Street Cafe is rated #1 American restaurant in Bakersfield on TripAdvisor and was recently listed on Yelp’s 25 best spots in the country for biscuits and gravy. It was also featured on the Food Network’s hit show, “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives,” on which Guy Fieri and loads of cafe regulars raved about the food.
