The Batiquitos Lagoon State Marine Conservation Area in Southern California provides individuals, couples, and families with a place to observe marine life in its natural environment. The protected area prohibits the taking of any of its resources at any time. Instead, visitors are encouraged to observe and record what they see through journaling, painting, and photography.
The area is part of the state of California's Marine Life Protection Act, which was passed in 1999. Preserving the habitat for all life forms is the reason for such strict rules.
Several decades ago, there were only five species of fish in the lagoon. Today, there are over 65! Conservation efforts have paid off tremendously. Fishing in the area is permitted with a fishing license but is limited to one location.
Artists love the lagoon because of its bountiful landscape. It's teeming with life that makes excellent subjects for painters. It's not unusual to run into creatives painting on the trail. The lagoon provides untouched beauty for them to capture in their artwork.
The Nature Center is run by volunteers and open to the public. You can visit it during its hours of operation. It's open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the weekends.
Fun for the whole family, including your pets, the lagoon offers trails to explore. You can bring your dog along, but remember to keep it on a leash and be mindful of the area's conservation rules. This is a place that everyone can continue to visit as long as they remain cognizant about leaving things the way that they found them at the start of their visit.
There are many places along the trail where you can stop and sit for a while. The laid-back atmosphere of the lagoon is part of its appeal. There is no rush to get from one part of it to another. You can take your time and thoroughly enjoy the scenery.
