I was born and raised in sunny Southern California and will never tire of the West Coast, although I spent several years living in Southeast Asia, about as far from California as you can get. Wherever I am in the world, I love straying from the beaten path, experiencing local life, and discovering hidden gems - camera in hand. I have spent my entire life (minus a few years spent out of the country) in Southern California. I grew up in the Greater Los Angeles area, where you can find nearly any kind of cuisine you enjoy or want to try. We all have our favorite spots that call us back again and again, but I have to say, finding new places to enjoy a fabulous meal just never gets old. I recently had the opportunity to try a newcomer on the proverbial block, and once again, found an absolute gem. The food scene in Southern California is wonderfully diverse, and Asterid in Los Angeles celebrates it in the best way. Take a look:
This incredible restaurant at Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown LA is a gem hiding in plain sight, tucked into the front of one of the most modern and architecturally stunning buildings in SoCal. I love the Walt Disney Concert Hall, and now there is just one more reason to pay a visit.

Asterid is the newest of three unique restaurants by Ray Garcia. Like the area around it, this contemporary American eatery draws inspiration from the diverse cultures and flavors that make up this city.

The atmosphere at Asterid is warm and inviting. Near the front, high tables are flooded with natural light during the day and are perfect for people-watching on this popular block.

The bar has a classic feel with little lamps and comfy stools, as well as a peek-a-boo view of the kitchen.

Brunch just might be my favorite meal, so that’s what my friend and I came for. We were seated in the back, where the lighting is a little lower and the ambiance is elegant, a little sultry, and relaxed - perfect for a long brunch and a friend catch-up date.

Of course, with a great chef at the helm, Asterid puts its own unique and innovative touch on familiar dishes and presents a few of its own creations. The menus are driven by and showcase the local, seasonal ingredients they feature.
It was hard to decide between breakfast and lunch flavors, and between savory and sweet, so between the two of us, we kind of got it all in. After the server’s description, I had to try the lemon poppyseed pancakes and my friend ordered the Bibimbap. Both were ridiculously delicious and so pretty!

The pancakes are thick, fluffy, lemony goodness with crispy edges that I could not get enough of, topped with blueberry compote and whipped ricotta. The Bibimbap is made with tender short rib (already a win) and was a vibrant blend of colors and flavors… so good.
Okay, don’t judge me, but we also snagged a “bread basket” which turned out to be a basket full of yummy muffins and pastries. The carb overload was totally worth it.

The brunch menu features an intriguing selection of cocktails, zero-proof beverages, beer, wine, coffees, and teas. The Gin & Guava was light, fruity, and just right for a Sunday afternoon. Next time, I want to try the Paper Plane!
I couldn’t help ending with a cup of coffee. Did I mention that the service was as great as the food?

We felt the need for a walk after brunch, so we headed up to the hidden garden at the top of the concert hall.

The Blue Ribbon Garden is such a pretty place to take a stroll, with a path that winds through planters full of greenery, flowering trees, a huge lotus fountain, and tables and chairs tucked throughout - a little oasis in the city and a lovely end to a wonderful dining experience.

Dinner at the restaurant is offered nightly from Tuesday through Sunday, and brunch is offered on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. See menus, more photos, and reservation information on the Asterid LA website. You really don’t need another excuse to enjoy a meal here, but I cannot imagine a better compliment than seeing a performance at Walt Disney Concert Hall! Have you been to the concert hall?
