I was born and raised in sunny Southern California and will never tire of the West Coast, although I spent several years living in Southeast Asia, about as far from California as you can get. Wherever I am in the world, I love straying from the beaten path, experiencing local life, and discovering hidden gems - camera in hand. The beach is my happy place and when I am not there (or writing), you will usually find me baking, watching movies, and cuddling my pugs. I have traveled around the country and around the world, and it never, ever gets old. Being able to combine my passion for travel and my love of writing is nothing short of a dream.
It is hard to believe that there are any pockets of Southern California, especially along the coast, that are not widely known and frequented by beach-goers. But I am happy to say that a few such places still exist, quiet bits of waterfront beauty where you can enjoy a little solitude even now. Take, for example, this little-known beach park in Lompoc, California.
This pristine area of California’s coast is the place where the Santa Ynez River meets the grand Pacific Ocean. The brackish waters of the estuary are home to all sorts of migratory sea birds.
Trees shaped by the wind give a special character to the park. Beach access is via a walking trail that begins at the parking area and goes under the train trestle to Surf Beach, the only public beach in this area.
This beach park is especially wonderful for bird watchers as it is a protected sanctuary for several species. It is so protected, in fact, that beach access is actually off-limits from March through September so as not to disturb the nesting season of the Snowy Plover. It is illegal to harm the Plovers, their eggs, or their young.
A wooden boardwalk leads to a sweet little pavilion that looks out over the estuary. Here you will find benches and even a scope so you can get a closer look at the area’s wildlife.
The park has picnic tables and lovely little playground, so you can bring the family and spend the afternoon playing and relaxing in this pretty space.
Ocean Beach Park is a perfect place to unwind and soak in a little coastal beauty without a crowd. The playground, picnic area, and estuary observation area are open year-round, even when beach access is limited. Have you been to this tranquil beach park and estuary in Lompoc?
