Deadwood, South Dakota Has World's Best Wild West Reenactment

When it comes to diverse and fascinating history, there is no place like South Dakota. Welcome to Deadwood, South Dakota: a historic town that was (and is) the epitome of the Old West!

Founded in 1876, Deadwood was once a booming mining town — thanks to Colonel George Armstrong Custer's iconic 1874 discovery — and housed not only hundreds of miners and their families but hundreds of businesses as well.

Taking place May 25th through September 21st, the Main Street Shootout runs three times a day and gives visitors a glimpse of how it was to live in Deadwood in the late 19th century.

While anyone who has ever experienced one of these Wild West re-enactments will tell you they are fun to see, Matador Network has also spoken out about the event, calling it the "best Wild West reenactment in the world!"

According to Matador, "You won’t find much of the HBO show here, beyond some autographed posters and names that ring a bell. But you will find a town that does the Wild West better than anyone."
