When it comes to diverse and fascinating history, there is no place like South Dakota. From our original Native American residents to explorers Lewis and Clark to the days of brothels and shootouts, there is no shortage of things to learn about around the Mount Rushmore State. Speaking of brothels and shootouts, did you know that you can still re-live the days of the Wild West here in South Dakota (without the worry of stray bullets and strange diseases)? To do so, make plans to visit this South Dakota Wild West re-enactment that is being called the best in the world:
Welcome to Deadwood, South Dakota: a historic town that was (and is) the epitome of the Old West!
Founded in 1876, Deadwood was once a booming mining town — thanks to Colonel George Armstrong Custer's iconic 1874 discovery — and housed not only hundreds of miners and their families but hundreds of businesses as well.
While Deadwood is not nearly as wild as it once was, you can still get a glimpse at its colorful history throughout the town, thanks to many museums, casinos, refurbished buildings, and...
...old-time shoot outs!
Taking place May 25th through September 21st, the Main Street Shootout runs three times a day and gives visitors a glimpse of how it was to live in Deadwood in the late 19th century.
For more information on the times and locations of each shootout, please visit Deadwood Alive's
website .
While anyone who has ever experienced one of these Wild West re-enactments will tell you they are fun to see, Matador Network has also spoken out about the event, calling it the "best Wild West reenactment in the world!"
According to Matador, "You won’t find much of the HBO show here, beyond some autographed posters and names that ring a bell. But you will find a town that does the Wild West better than anyone."
