Being from South Dakota, there are some things that just come natural, and some are just weird. We’re a unique group of people, so it’s not surprising that those who have grown up here may have been taught a strange habit or two, but there are some habits we’ll simply never grow out of. Here are nine of the habits all South Dakotans are practically born with, and we don’t see it changing any time soon!

Here in South Dakota, what side of the river you live on truly matters. "East river" is often stereotyped as big city folk, while "west side" are often claimed as nature-loving country folk. No matter what side you’re on, it’s "the wrong side" to the other.

To be fair, maybe we’re just bitter because people often hate on us. At least we’re not North Dakota. Just don’t confuse us for the other or you’ll have problems.

If you grew up here, you’ve definitely had to wait for livestock or wild animals to cross the road at one point or another. It's the polite thing to do.

Granted, we’ve been doing it since we were 14! Yep, in South Dakota you can drive at 14, and we’ve learned from a young age to not be afraid of a little snow.

Maybe not every South Dakotan does this one, but once you’ve started the habit of eating a bowl of chili with a warm cinnamon roll, you’ll never go back.

Football fans in South Dakota typically cheer for the Minnesota Vikings or the Green Bay Packers. It’s interesting being a part of a rivalry where neither teams are repping South Dakota.
