Being from South Dakota is something to be proud of. However, sometimes when people find out you are from our glorious state, it can bring some unwanted consequences in the form of stereotypes. Some grow out of fact and some grow out of fiction; here are 9 stereotypes about South Dakota that need to be put to rest.
1. All South Dakotans have accents.
Seriously though, we don’t have accents. Everyone else has accents.
2. We all drive tractors everywhere.
We definitely don’t all drive tractors but we do all get to take our Driver’s Permit test at the age of 14. Within 6 months of passing the test we are allowed to drive solo. While the law that made this possible was put into place so that kids could be able to help their parents on the farm, it is still in effect even in the more urban areas of the state.
3. No one has electricity.
We may be admittedly and happily behind the times when it comes to fashion, but we definitely have electricity and, believe it or not, internet! Which is how we are able to post and share this article.
4. There’s nothing to do in South Dakota.
In a state this beautiful and unique, the entertainment possibilities are truly limitless. Miles of plains to rolling hills and buttes, the terrain offers unique experiences in all seasons. Any true South Dakotan will tell you, there is plenty to do in South Dakota if you know how to make your own fun.
5. Everyone lives on a farm.
Just to be clear, a lot of us do live on farms. But not everyone! South Dakota’s biggest city has over 180,000 people, none of whom live on farms.
6. South Dakota only consists of corn fields.
We aren't a state of only corn fields. We also have soybean fields and wheat fields and we are proud of each and every one.
7. It's freezing all the time in South Dakota.
While South Dakota winters are brutal, our summers are really quite perfect. A perfect mix of warm weather and stunning thunderstorms make our state the perfect place to live. It’s definitely worth putting up with the windy, cold winters to be able to live in this amazing state.
8. Everyone in South Dakota hunts.
Even though its a stereotype, its mostly true. Hunting is a integral part of our culture and entertainment. Also, its a totally valid reason to get out of school for season opener.
9. There's no culture in South Dakota.
South Dakota is home to plenty of history and culture. With names like Custer, Sitting Bull and many more, you know the history is rich here. Our arts community is constantly growing. This photo features the State of David located in Sioux Falls, SD. It is just one display of art and culture in South Dakota.
If you’ve been accused of three or more of these stereotypes, you’re probably from South Dakota. Which stereotypes about South Dakota are you tired of hearing?
