There seems to be a rumor going around that the best part of waking up is a generic coffee in your cup, but that is a flat-out lie. Why? It’s because the best part of waking up is getting a delicious donut from a small-town bakery, like South Dakota’s very own Royal Bake Shop.
Located in Centerville (population: 879), the Royal Bake Shop is an iconic Turner County gem that has been serving their famous pastries since the 1940s.
Featuring a comfortable, down-home ambiance, the Royal Bake Shop is a state institution not only for its delicious rolls and danishes but friendly owners as well!
Keith and Janine Ellis have owned and operated the small-town bakery since 1993.
While we believe the friendly folks at the Shop are reason enough to visit, you will also want to treat yourself to the bakery's pièce de résistance: the donuts.
Though the Royal has many flavors of donuts to choose from, the most popular of all is the Zebra: a delicious marbled donut that is topped with their famous chocolate sauce and then glazed.
Psst... did you know that there is even a Big Zebra, which is perfect for birthdays, get-togethers, or a case of the Mondays?
Did you snooze and lose out on the Zebra? No problem, as the Royal Bake Shop offers a bunch more can't-miss donuts, crullers, cinnamon rolls, bear claws, and danishes.
Please note: These freshly baked goodies do go quickly, so make sure to get there close to open!
The Royal Bake Shop is open Tuesday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m.
