Does South Dakota have any ski resorts?
SD may not be as renowned for its skiing and snowboarding as, say, Vermont or Colorado...but yes! In addition to a plethora of sledding hills, South Dakota has a few ski resorts, mainly in the Black Hills region. The most popular one is Terry Peak Ski Area, which has the highest lift service between the Rockies and the Alps. It offers multiple slopes for skiing and snowboarding, as well as a terrain park and a ski school.
Another ski resort option is Great Bear Ski Valley, which is a smaller resort near Sioux Falls. It has multiple slopes and one ski lift.
Word on the street is that Deer Mountain Ski Resort (which temporarily shuttered back in 2017) is slated to reopen to winter visitors in 2024.
We especially love that because skiing in South Dakota is so underrated (which is a shame!), it's also incredibly affordable and blissfully crowd-free. But if skiing isn't your thing, feel free to dive into snowboarding, tubing, or even ice-skating this winter!
