Have you noticed that every state has not only their own unique accent, but a unique way of saying things? While we South Dakotans may think we are exempt from this (after all, everything we say is completely normal, right?), we are not, as evidenced by these 6 silly sayings that will only make sense if you hail from the Mount Rushmore State:
1. You betcha!
While "you betcha" isn't only used in South Dakota (in most places, it is used as a way to say "you bet" or "you got it"), it still has a slightly different meaning than most. You see, when we say "you betcha," it is usually in acknowledgment of being thanked, meaning it is our own fun way of saying, "you're welcome."
2. Crick
In other places, a crick might be slang for a chirping bug (emphasis on might... we aren't for sure if this is even a thing) or a sore neck, but here, crick = creek, or a "stream, brook, or minor tributary of a river."
3. Drug Store
Sure; every state has countless pharmacies and small/generic grocery stores, but only in South Dakota can you find the REAL drug store, which is the historic Wall Drug!
4. Kitty corner
No, a kitty corner is not a place with a bunch of stray felines (unfortunately), but a legitimate direction and another way of saying something is directly across the street from something else.
5. The Hills
While the rest of the world thinks of trashy MTV shows, a raised area of land, or "Have Eyes," we think of the most beautiful place in the world: the Black Hills.
6. Hot beef
Nah, hot beef doesn't mean warm burgers or pot roast, but rather an AMAZING sandwich that is chock-full of flavorful and boneless beef roast in between two slices of buttered toast and smothered in brown gravy... yum!
