South Dakota boasts endless opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors, ranging from leisurely strolls to all-day treks. Next time you’re in the mood for a short-and-sweet adventure, look no further than Sylvan Lake Shore Trail in Custer State Park. This easy, one-mile hike features awe-inspiring waterfront views and leads past towering boulders. Take a look:
At just 1.1 miles long, Sylvan Lake Shore Trail might be one of the shortest hikes in South Dakota. Despite its length -- or lack thereof, should we say, this Custer State Park gem boasts some truly incredible views.
With an elevation gain of less than 100 feet, this trail certainly doesn't require an elite fitness level. It's just a leisurely stroll ideal for a morning walk or quick afternoon adventure.
Skirting the pristine waters of Sylvan Lake, the path meanders around rugged, lofty boulders. As you gaze up at their mountainous peaks, any lingering worries suddenly appear trivial.
Plenty of surprises await, such as this enchanting staircase. Nestled between towering rock walls and surrounded by lush greenery, this quick little climb truly feels like something out of a storybook.
Eventually, you'll come upon a dam that, although dry in this photo, occasionally has running water after a decent rain. You'll enjoy a bird's-eye view, as the trail leads right along the edge.
You'll stand in awe as the scene opens up to reveal the lake in all its stunning glory. Since the hike is so short, this would be a great place to revel in the unparalleled vistas and blissful tranquility.
As if the trail wasn't bucket list-worthy enough already, just wait until you see the sweeping panoramas of the distant Black Hills. Make sure to bring a camera!
The landscape changes with the seasons, so there's always something new and different to look at. In the spring, vibrant wildflowers pop up all along the trail, encouraging hikers to slow down and "smell the roses," so to speak.
By the time winter rolls around, the lake is frozen over and makes for an absolutely magical sight. You can see where the ripples first came in contact with freezing air and completely iced over -- truly spectacular!
