When the weather heats up this season, you’ll want to escape the blistering heat with a visit to the Black Hills. Sheridan Lake is one great option; its cool waters and ponderosa pines offer welcome respite from the heat.
Lake Sheridan is one of South Dakota's most stunning lakes.
Boasting 7.5 miles of wooded shoreline, this beauty covers an area of 383 acres, and it's so beautiful here that you'll definitely want to stay awhile.
Luckily, the lake has a gorgeous campground where you can lay your head at night.
The Sheridan Lake South Shore Campground is surrounded by a ponderosa pine forest, so the campsites are cool, shady and secluded. You'll find this beautiful campground at 8221 U.S. 16, Rapid City, SD 57702.
The campground offers 129 campsites, situated in five loops. The campground has water, picnic tables, campfire rings, and vault toilets, and of course, plenty of natural beauty.
Sites cost just $26 per night, but you'll want to reserve yours in advance because the campground fills up on summer weekends. To reserve a campsite, visit the Forest Service's
website .
Sheridan Lake has tons of recreation opportunities.
Fishing can be very good at times, and fish populations include rainbow trout, brown trout, largemouth bass, Northern pike and more. Make sure to get your fishing license before you visit!
A hike on the Flume Trail is the perfect way to spend a day here. Hike the entire 12.4-mile-long trail, or complete one or more of the three sections for a shorter hike.
This historic trail follows the Rockerville Flume, which was used during the Gold Rush until 1885. Along the way, you'll encounter a few mining tunnels, portions of the old flume, and even some abandoned mining equipment. The trail is rated as moderate, with an elevation gain of 1,351 feet.
Sheridan Lake Marina will hook you up with some fun toys to help you explore the lake.
The marina rents pontoon boats, fishing boats, and ski boats in different sizes to accommodate your group.
Rent a wave runner for some exciting action on the water.
There two-seat wave runners are a blast, and can be an affordable way to cool off and play on the lake.
Take a Hydro Bike for a spin.
Hydro Bikes are the perfect way to explore the lake and get some exercise at the same time. These are just $15/hour to rent. For more information on renting equipment from Sheridan Lake Marina, visit its
