Tori Jane is a storm chaser, writer, photographer, and the village idiot - in that order. When she's not out and about dancing with the meanest storms on planet Earth for funsies she can be found wandering, shooting landscapes, writing, editing photos, and otherwise up to no good. Legend has it that she can also be occasionally spotted typing up short bios in the third person, but those rumors are unsubstantiated.
Sometimes, you find yourself with a little free time on your hands. During these times, we often find ourselves seeking out fun or interesting things to do, but they may be a little more difficult to find in South Dakota than in other states. Well, should you find your way here, because if you’re looking for something interesting to do, you’re in luck. Today, we’re going to take a look at a bizarre – and fun! – little place known as the Cosmos Mystery Area in South Dakota. When it comes to offbeat things to do in South Dakota, this might be toward the top of the list. It seldom gets stranger than this.
When we say this place is quirky, we absolutely mean it in the weirdest way possible.
Discovered accidentally by two young men looking to build a cabin in the early 1950s. Something about the entire area threw their senses out of whack, and they realized this weird little wooded area was something special.
We won't give away exactly how or why it works the way it does, but this strange place essentially functions by playing tricks on the way your eyes and brain process information.
As a result, you'll discover that in some areas your height will gradually appear to increase (or decrease).
Without a horizon line to refer to, our brains get a little wacky, and the Cosmos exploits this wackiness in the best of ways. We don't want to give away too much - you'll just have to show up and see for yourself!
Plus, there's plenty of fun stuff to do in the Mystery Area other than the house.
Check out the geode mine, as well as some of the other delights you'll find onsite. This makes for a perfectly weird and wonderful day trip for folks of all ages.
