With kids out of school for the unforeseeable future, it is time for us South Dakotans to get creative in keeping our kids happy, healthy, educated, and entertained! While you could always plop your kid in front of the TV for a PBS marathon (which we advise against), there are other fun and easy activities that you can try, including:
1. Online storytime and music classes via the Black Hills Studios of the Arts
If you don't mind setting your child in front of a screen for a short amount of time, check out the Black Hills Studios of the Arts on
Facebook . While in-person music lessons are currently limited, they are hosting daily activities on Facebook, including sing-alongs, storytime, online dance parties, and more.
2. Baking and cooking
How are our favorite recipes passed down from generation to generation? By teaching our children to make them, of course! Take this time at home to teach your kids how to cook like their ancestors, and make South Dakota classics like kolache, kuchen, Frybread, and Chislic. Yum!
3. Travel around South Dakota without ever leaving your home
Did you know that several places around SoDak have live webcams set up? Thanks to this fact, you can visit such iconic spots as Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and the Devil's Tower without leaving your couch. We will see you there! (For a full list of webcam links, check out
KT Connections .)
4. Take virtual field trips
5. Get a head start of this year's 4-H project
Hey, those pigs are not going to feed themselves, and that cake isn't going to bake itself! Why not use this quarantine as an opportunity to practice or prepare, which will teach responsibility and maybe even get them a blue ribbon at the fair.
6. Write letters to family and friends
With social distancing comes both sad feelings and loneliness. Do you have a grandparent or other family member who lives in a nursing home and cannot see family? Have your child write them a letter and/or draw a picture. Not only will you make that relative's day, but you will also teach your children the art of letter writing and doing things for others.
7. Crafts
Do you want to make fun, Only in South Dakota crafts with your kids?
3 Boys and a Dog has a round-up of fun and easy ideas, including a Gold Nugget Necklace, Bald Eagle, and paper Abraham Lincoln.
