Have you ever had someone ask you, ‘What’s so special about South Dakota?’ Well, we have the answer! These are eight unique things you can only find in South Dakota. Beautiful scenery and nice people can be found almost anywhere, but these things are specifically found in our lovely state.
1. 1880s Homestead
This Airbnb will transport you back in time. With no electricity and barely running water - it is truly a unique experience to stay out here in the middle of nowhere. It's one you won't regret!
See more information about the homestead .
2. Corn Palace
The infamous Mitchell Corn Palace in South Dakota is the only building of its kind. Built back in 1892 and rebuilt a few times since, the palace corn is replaced yearly. Local artists design the murals made of corn, making the building a true masterpiece.
3. Mount Rushmore
Mount Rushmore makes number three on our list for obvious reasons. Where else can you find the faces of four US Presidents carved into stone and covering 1,278.45 acres? You can't! South Dakota is home to this unique memorial and national treasure.
4. Crazy Horse
Not only is South Dakota the only state to have this remarkable monument to Crazy Horse, our state history surrounding Crazy Horse is just as unique as well. The monument was started in 1948 and is not yet complete. The monument honors Crazy Horse and his dedicated protection to the Lakota people against the US Government.
5. Giant prairie dog
This SIX TON prairie dog is a sight unlike any other. Located in Cactus Flats, SD, this prairie dog is 12 feet tall. You have to see it to believe it!
6. Center of the Nation Monument
In Belle Fourche, SD you will find the center of the nation monument. The actual location of the center of the nation is just outside of town and you can visit that too. Both are unique to South Dakota!
7. Petrified wood
Believe it or not, South Dakota is home to the Petrified Wood Park. It is located in Lemmon and takes up an entire block of their downtown. It includes two museums which, you guessed it, are built entirely out of petrified wood.
8. Porter Sculpture Park
Last on our list is Porter Sculpture Park, located just off I-90 near Montrose. The park is full of sculptures made out of metal and other scraps. Most notable is this large bull's head which is equivalent in size to Mount Rushmore and weighs over 25 tons.
