In this day and age, finding a small and personable store that is both locally-owned and rooted in the community is hard to find, which is why we like to feature these local gems any chance we get. If you are looking for a place to shop and eat that is part old-time general store and part soda fountain, visit the unique Ward’s in South Dakota:
Located in the small town of De Smet, Ward's is a one-of-a-kind shopping experience with a fascinating history.
According to the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society, the site of Ward's - which at one time included a store, office building, and stable - was once owned by Laura's father Charles, who later sold the property to Edward H. Cous, who then converted it into an opera house.
After serving as an opera house for 2 decades, the site became a JC Penney and then, finally, the beloved Ward's Store and Bakery!
When you visit Ward's, you will find loads of goodies to shop and peruse, including locally made food and gifts, antiques, apparel, and more.
While we highly recommend staying a while to shop, the absolutely can't-miss part of Ward's is the bakery and cafe, which specializes in all things homemade!
Whether you're there bright and early for breakfast or are craving a made-to-order burger, Ward's is sure to be your new favorite place to eat.
Do you need a quick pick-me-up? Forget the generic chain coffees and opt for something even more delicious and energizing.
Ward's Store and Bakery is open Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
