In this day and age, finding a small and personable store that is both locally-owned and rooted in the community is hard to find, which is why we like to feature these local gems any chance we get. If you are looking for a place to shop and eat that is part old-time general store and part soda fountain, visit the unique Ward’s in South Dakota:
Located in the small town of De Smet, Ward's is a one-of-a-kind shopping experience with a fascinating history.
According to the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society, the site of Ward's - which at one time included a store, office building, and stable - was once owned by Laura's father Charles, who later sold the property to Edward H. Cous, who then converted it into an opera house.
While we highly recommend staying a while to shop, the absolutely can't-miss part of Ward's is the bakery and cafe, which specializes in all things homemade!
