Have you ever heard of the Hippie Hole? While it sounds like a potentially groovy psychedelic shop or something, it’s actually a stunningly beautiful “secret” swimming hole located somewhere near Keystone. It’s gorgeous, and for those willing to hike to find it, it makes for quite the reward on a warm day. But what about on a cooler day? We’re in luck: winter in South Dakota brings with it plenty to do and see, but Hippie Hole turns into a whole other kind of wonderland. Come see for yourself!

In the summer, Hippie Hole is lush and green, and the sound of roaring water can be heard over a distance.

There are numerous crisp, clear pools to relax in - including smaller ones great for the kiddos - but the main draw is actually the waterfall.
At times, it's a trickle. At others - thanks to snowmelt or heavy rain - it's a roaring wonder ready for adventure.

But in the winter, when temperatures drop well below freezing, this whole place transforms into something amazing.
First, the stiller water freezes. Then, the waterfall slowly firms up until it's a miniature glacier hanging off a ledge.

While the rest of Hippie Hole doesn't tend to get more than a dusting of snow (though some winters are much harsher than others), the frozen water surrounded by a fresh, soft powdering of snow on the surrounding rocks makes for a photogenic scene.

Honestly, I'm not sure there are a whole lot of things in this life that are as cool as a frozen waterfall.

Perhaps it's because waterfalls are a symbol of power and formidability... but even nature's most formidable characters aren't immune to a winter freeze.
You don't truly recognize just how large the waterfall is until you insert some people around it for scale.

Reaching it can be a little bit confusing, though, so here are a few hints:

To reach it, start on South Highway 16 near Rockerville. From there, head south on Rockerville Road and drive until you reach a cattle guard.
Turn east and meander down the dirt road a while.

In a few moments, you'll find a parking area. Park, and then follow the trail that leads down the hill. Soon enough, you'll reach the creek.

At the creek, head south for about 15 minutes, and soon you’ll be at the head of the waterfall! Woo hoo! Honestly, winter, summer, spring, or fall, the Hippie Hole is one of the coolest (see what I did there) ways to explore South Dakota even when it’s a lil’ chilly out. Winter in South Dakota is somehow made more tolerable by amazing places like this one.
