I have said it before and I will say it again: South Dakota is unfairly underrated, and most people do not even realize it until they come to visit for the first time. Do you want to talk about something even more unjust? When one of our wonderful towns does not get the recognition it deserves, like this small community that may just be the most underrated in America:
Welcome to our capital city, AKA one of the most underrated cities in the country.
Founded in 1880, Pierre is the second-least populous state capital in the country (behind only Montpelier, Vermont), which makes for even more of a pleasant surprise for out-of-town visitors!
What's so great about Pierre? Where to begin? For starters, there are numerous museums and historic sites...
Pictured is the South Dakota Discovery Center; a "hands-on science playground" that boasts exhibit halls, classes, and more.
...antiques, boutiques, and other shopping...
If you live in Pierre, you already know about the vintage wonder that is Saturdays!
...and, of course, the beautiful Capitol building and grounds.
Hungry? Pierre has a restaurant for everyone, including Mexican, Italian, Japanese, and American.
As if you really needed another reason to visit, Pierre is also home to some of the best outdoor recreation and scenery in the state, like the pictured Farm Island Recreation Area.
