South Dakota is known worldwide for its Old West past, but did you know that you can still experience some of it for yourself? While many of the Old West’s famous heroes and outlaws are long gone, you can still pay homage to them via Mount Moriah Cemetery, a must-visit historic spot right here in the Mount Rushmore State:
Located in Deadwood, Mount Moriah Cemetery may be one of the most iconic burial grounds in America, thanks to its colorful history and equally colorful "residents."
Established in 1878, Mount Moriah is one of the town's first cemeteries and houses not only a long list of western legends but also beautiful views of the surrounding Deadwood Gulch and Black Hills.
Just who will you find at Mount Moriah Cemetery? During your visit, you will find the tombstones of Wild Bill Hickock, Calamity Jane, Seth Bullock, and many other famous (and not-so-famous characters).
In addition to seeing the graves of heroes and outlaws alike, visitors will learn more about the area's history via plaques and signs depicting everything from now-eradicated diseases to Deadwood's Jewish history and other Old West legends.
