Looking for a wonderful getaway out in nature? Visit this scenic South Dakota campground that offers everything from gorgeous hikes to streams of blood to mysterious ghosts. (Did we mention it’s also haunted?)
Located in northeast South Dakota is the beautiful Sica Hollow State Park, which may look innocent enough on the outside but hides a dark secret.
Translated to "bad or evil" in Dakota Sioux, Sica Hollow has had its harrowing reputation for years, beginning centuries ago when several peaceful Native American camps were wiped out by the spirit Wakantanka, who sent a messenger to rid the land of an unwanted visitor, in turn killing nearly all of its residents.
In addition to all of the carnage, ancient Native American tribes also claimed to witness the springs gushing with blood, making for an even creepier story.
Please note: The red blood has been written off by historians as mineral water, but we happen to think the blood of the tribes' ancestors makes for a more intriguing story!
As if all of this was not terrifying enough, the 1970s brought on even more legends, as several people disappeared without a trace, thought to be the work of a Missing Link-type man spotted running through the forest.
Do you think you can handle all of Sica Hollow's alleged haunts? If you can, you will be rewarded in several ways, including its breathtaking scenery, unforgettable hiking trails, and horseback riding opportunities.
Camping at Sica Hollow begins at $13 per site and can be booked by visiting the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks' website or by calling (800) 710-2267.
Sica Hollow State Park is open year-round and costs $6 per day per vehicle to enter.
Address: 44950 Park Road, Sisseton, SD 57262
