Farms are a dime a dozen out in South Dakota, but there is one that passerby will always remember. Moschell Farms, near Fedora, is home to Highland cattle, which is an ancient breed of cow from Scotland.
Like most things deemed “ancient,” Highland cows look pretty cool.
They have long, wavy fur that is usually one color━but this color can change three times in their lifetimes.
Long hair grows from the tops of their heads and falls into their eyes.
The longer hair also grows above their noses, making it look as if they have mustaches.
Moschell Farms has been around since 2007, when the owners went to go buy a baby Highland as a pet.
Instead, they came home with 19 cows and a bull, and the farm was started.
Today, Moschell Farms is home to around 100 Highland cows.
Some are sold as pets, and others are sold to be butchered. It is one of the most unique farms in South Dakota.
The cows are all grass-fed at Moschell Farms. There are no hormones or antibiotics used, either.
Beef from Highland cows is lean, tender, and of higher quality than average beef, especially from cows treated as well as the ones on Moschell Farms.
It has become somewhat of a roadside attraction, with many cars stopping to take photos of the shaggy livestock.
The farmers welcome people to stop by if they want a closer look at the unique cows on their land.
The love the farmers have for their animals is clear; they speak of these cows very highly and tend to them with great care.
Their Facebook page is populated with photos of the cattle being silly, accompanied with loving captions.
Moschell Farms is located at 42372 SD Highway 34 in Fedora, South Dakota. When you see the curly, mustachioed cows, you’ll know you’re in the right place!
