When most people think of South Dakota, they automatically picture Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and demonstrations of “Midwest nice,” but many are surprised to learn that our state is also home to one of the best Cold War museums in the country. If you are ready to learn more about this terrifying time in American history or if you are a fan of incredible ballistic missiles, you will want to visit the fascinating Minuteman Missile National Historic Site ASAP:
Located in the small Haakon County town of Philip, the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site is housed on an incredible 15-acre campus that will give you a unique, behind-the-scenes look at the tense arms race.
Showcasing old missiles and technology, the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site offers a fantastic look at Cold War-era machinery, thousands of which were hidden in different locations throughout the 1960s to the 1990s as a means to protect America from nuclear attack.
While every part of the Missile Site is a must-see, be sure to check out the jaw-dropping Minuteman Missile, which according to the National Park Service, was designed to maintain peace and prevent war.
In addition to the missiles themselves, the Minuteman Site is also home to a can't-miss Visitor's Center, which is the perfect place to begin your visit thanks to its hands-on exhibits, knowledgable guides, and educational films.
Before you go, be sure also to book a tour of the Launch Control Facility Delta-01, which gives visitors a unique glimpse at both the missile and original Launch Control Center.
