If you grew up in South Dakota, you probably have fond memories of your oma’s homemade kolache, watching the trees change in the Black Hills, and taking in the Christmas festivities at the Winter Wonderland at Falls Park, right? In addition to these fond memories, we are willing to bet that you also remember shopping at and/or visiting one (or all) of these iconic 5 South Dakota stores:
1. Wall Drug (Wall)
How could we have a list about the 5 most iconic South Dakota stores without first mentioning the world-famous Wall Drug? Opened in 1931, Wall Drug -- and its 76,000-square-foot storefront -- has a little something for everyone, including a cafe, a roaring life-size T-rex, shopping galore, antiques, and a whole lot more.
2. Manolis Grocery (Huron)
Opened in the 1920s, Manolis Grocery is one of the Mount Rushmore State's longest running grocery stores that not only specializes in fresh deli selections, but also some of the best homemade sandwiches you will try!
3. Woolworth's
Ah, Woolworths... who can forget window shopping at this nostalgic gem?! While not exclusive to South Dakota, we still have nothing but fond memories of the original five-and-dime store.
4. Ward's (De Smet)
Family-owned and operated since the 1950s, Ward's will make you think you have stepped into a time machine, not only for its delicious cafe options, but for its super friendly staff and personalized shopping experience as well.
5. Montgomery's (Sioux Falls)
Last but certainly not least is Montgomery's; a 5th generation South Dakota furniture store that first opened in 1888 in Alexandria and has since expanded to 4 SoDak locations (Sioux Falls, Mitchell, Madison, and Watertown). Raise your hand if your couch and/or bedroom set came from Montgomery's! *raises both hands*
