In South Dakota, we have a unique way of doing things… If you give us a giant mountain, we will carve it into a memorial. Or, if you give us a kitchen, we will come up with some of the most delicious foods you will ever taste. Better yet, if you give us Christmas, we will celebrate with these 6 unique Only in South Dakota traditions:
1. We all head down to the Capitol building for pie.
What? Doesn't every state treat its residents with not only an extravagant display of 100+ twinkling trees, but homemade pie? No? Well then, I'm more than happy to be a South Dakotan!
2. Speaking of pies, we like to tap into our German ancestry to make some of the best Christmas treats!
Santa doesn't want another cookie, people; he wants homemade kuchen and/or lefse (pictured)!
3. What do we serve with all of those delicious European treats? Pheasant, of course!
Hey, don't knock it until you try it (meaning both pheasant hunting and eating)!
4. Who needs an actual tree when you have people?
Skip the firs and evergreens this year and opt for the Aberdeen Living Christmas Tree, which features toe-tapping holiday favorites AND the iconic "living" tree!
5. We will still go camping in the frigid cold...
This is South Dakota... if we only camped when it was warm, we would only get to go 2-3 weeks a year.
6. ...and will go skiing whilst dressed as Santa if we want to.
Don't judge us and we won't judge you, okay?
